On American whalers, cutting-in was always done to the starboard side. The cutting stage was lowered, and the long laborious process of stripping the blubber from the whale carcass began. Whaling was a hard and dangerous business, even at this stage. Sharks were always attracted to the blood, and woe to the unlucky whaleman who slipped and fell into those waters. The figures in the engraving are from drawings done by the great marine artist Gordon Grant. |
