ON THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII
CORDIALLY INVITES YOU TO
I first visited
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park nearly 30 years ago. Immediately
capturing my imagination with its powerful raw beauty, the Park’s
capacity to ‘wow’ and inspire has intensified over the years. I’m
fascinated by how the Earth moves. In every direction one looks are the
rhythms and flows, with vivid contrasts, of an incredibly dynamic and
living landscape. Lava flows and pit craters, ʻŌhiʻa and ʻIʻiwi, massive
cloud formations and volcanic plumes, all of these and more inspire me
and will continue to do so for many years to come. Nearly all the works
in the exhibition were painted outdoors directly from life, ‘en plein
air’, or in my studio using the field studies as models. Thank you for visiting and I hope you'll enjoy the
paintings. Aloha. ~Robert Weiss
Robert Weiss has
over 40 years’ experience as a professional artist in the commercial and
fine art fields. While growing up his artistic inclinations were
encouraged by a family that included painters, musicians, and writers.
In 1973 he began studies at Pratt Institute, including illustration,
graphic design, and printmaking. After graduating, Bob worked in New
York City as an advertising art director and studio artist. For three
years during this period he practiced painting and classical realism at
the Reilly League of Artists in White PLains, NY. In 1985 he began
practicing the art of scrimshaw and became internationally known as one
of the foremost scrimshaw artists in the world, receiving numerous
awards for his work. Moving to Hawaii Island in 2006 inspired Bob to
paint outdoors frequently, and he now paints full-time, drawing his
inspiration from the life and beauty of Hawaii.
