Scrimshaw was once the province of working whalemen
at sea as a way to pass the time during voyages that could last five years or more.
Today's scrimshanders are highly skilled artists who have selected
engraving on ivory as their chosen medium. This new breed of ivory artist uses both
historical information and their imagination to create highly complex works of art in a
wide variety of subjects. Foremost among these is Robert Weiss who is regarded by many as
the premier practitioner of this art form. If you are a collector who

Sadly, Ken Fredericks passed
away a few days before Thanksgiving.
For the past 22 years he crafted all of the mounts for my work.
He will be deeply missed by all of us who were lucky enough to know him
as a Master Craftsman and a friend.
As were all of his works, so too was he one of a kind.
Rest in peace, my friend. ~Bob
